One necessary and extremely important component of computers is the hard drive. The "hard drive" stores your games, applications, music, pictures, videos, and documents. As such, you should be sure the notebook computer you're thinking of buying has a hard drive that can give you the storage and performance that you need. There are two important considerations when looking at hard drive specifications for your computer notebook: hard drive size and hard drive RPM.Hard Drive SizeHard drive size simply refers to the data storage capacity of a hard disk drive. Desktop computer hard drives offer sizes of up to 500 gigabytes (GB), while "notebook computer" hard dives offer sizes of up to 160 GB. Notebook computer hard drives are more expensive than desktop computer hard drives with more than twice the capacity of the notebook "hard drives" . This is due to the engineering difficulties inherent in making high-capacity hard drivess for the smaller notebook computers form-factor.A notebook computer's hard drives size indicates how much data a notebook computer can store. If you are interested in storing large amounts of movies, pictures, or music, you want to go with a larger hard drives to avoid running out of space.A hard drives's size has very little to do with its performance, unless the drive is almost full. The Windows NTFS File System requires a minimum of 10% of the hard drives to be free space for optimum performance, and it frequently requests as much as 15%. This means that, on a 40 GB drive, Windows prefers that you use a maximum of 34-36 GB, leaving 4-6 GB of space unused. On a 160 GB drive, Windows prefers that you use a maximum of 136-144 GB, leaving a massive 16-24 GB unused. If you start to go over these Windows storage limits, you may notice your computer's performance taking drastic hits.Hard Drive RPMHard drive RPM is a hard drives's rotational speed, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Desktop hard drivess now have speeds as high as 15,000 RPM. Notebook notebook computers, on the other hand, currently have an RPM ceiling of 7200 RPM.A notebook computer's RPM indicates how fast the drive's spindle will move or how fast the notebook computer platters will spin. The higher the spin rate is, the shorter the seek time and latency will be. This translates to quicker data access and transfer. How Large and How FastThe greater the free space and the higher the RPM, the better your notebook computer's performance will be, so go for a slightly-more-than-comfortable size and the highest RPM for your [*_*]'s [*_*]. A large [*_*] gives you the option to expand in the future, and you can never go wrong with a [*_*] that can give you fast access to your stored data.It is even more crucial that you go with the top-of-the-line [*_*] size and RPM for your [*_*] if you are fond of computer games, you have a lot of multimedia files, or you want to be able to easily upgrade your programs. These games, content and programs take up a lot of space. A high RPM [*_*] can also cut down on game load times, giving you more time enjoying your games and less time staring at loading screens. This article may be republished freely as long as this copyright notice and box of resource links are included at the bottom.Copyright 2007 MALIBAL, lLc
We all know that computer viruses exist and have heard the many horror tales of how they can take out thousands of computers in one shot. Unfortunately for those whose computer has been damaged by a "computer virus" , these tales are not only true, but very destructive and time-consuming. However, even if you know how to protect your computer from one of these malicious viruses, there are other malware programs that can be almost as damaging and is far more common. The culprits are called spyware and adware. These irritating programs can interfere with your computer every time you jump online. Adware is more or less harmless when settled onto your computer by itself. Mostly it simply generates a lot of spam (unsolicited and unwanted email) for products that bring advertising directly to your email. Adware can also produce "popup" ads on your computer. Spyware, however, is much more threatening and dangerous to your computer. Spyware not only floods you with advertisements, but it also accesses information on your computer and delivers it to other companies and potentially dangerous people. Additionally, spyware can change your entire computer through PC configurations which open you up to a world of trouble. Spyware is utilized by unscrupulous people as one of the main means of identity theft because it fishes information from your computer and can "learn" about almost anything you do on the Internet, then report back to the originator. There are numerous methods for ridding your computer of spyware, but the most effective is learning to avoid it in the first place. You can begin this process by adjusting your computer settings appropriately. Depending on your operating system, you may need to do some informal reading of your system's help files. You should find your Internet connectivity options and then look for a tab that refers to the security of your computer system. You should always adjust this to at least Medium security, or Medium-High. If you change it to High security, that setting might actually prevent you from accessing web sites that you need; so Medium is normally recommended. You also need to ensure you have a firewall in place on your computer. A firewall is sofrware that can be configured to automatically block out unidentified programs which attempt to gain uninvited access to your computer. The parameters of your firewall are easy to set, and by doing so you allow certain programs in while keeping harmful (or questionable) ones out. Given most people's lack of knowledge about programs that need to run on a computer, a firewall will sometimes try to block program resources that are indeed harmless. That, however, it is a small inconvenience for keeping your computer and information safe from intruders. Lastly you certainly will need an anti-spyware program running on your computer's background. This helpful software can be downloaded from an Internet merchant or purchased at any store selling computer software. You need a program that can detect and intercept spyware as it attempts to invade your computer; it should also have the ability to scan your computer for existing spyware and isolate it. Make sure to keep your anti-spyware program up-to-date with new daily or weekly "definition" files so that it works effectively. You never want to leave your computer unprotected and open to spyware or adware.
Configuring an ASDL router with a local area network is no longer the exclusive domain of computer savvy network administrators and technicians. Routers are becoming increasingly easier to set up according to anyones specific needs. Many of these network devices offer an online feature that allows the user to do the configuring in a graphical interface setting after logging in.The various brands of ADSL routers differ in software design and in the options they offer. The procedures I've sketched here are based on the Netgear routers with which I have been long familiar, and whose configuration interfaces I consider to be among the user friendliest. Actually the settings to configure in all ASDL routers are alike. They just differ in the way they are explained or defined. It is best to consult your routers manual or Web site to ascertain exactly how you are to go about working out the configuration for your particular model. Port forwarding, local area network (LAN) set up, and Web site restriction are among the common requirements of router configuration. I am limiting the scope of the discussion in this article to port forwarding. We wont be talking about setting up the other features of your ADSL router until later. Forwarding your port is the same as saying you are opening them up to use specific programs. There are programs that require an open port in order to function. Oftentimes, an ADSL router will close some ports. These need to be manuall opened. An example of a program requiring a specific port to be forwarded is one that makes file sharing possible. Youll need to know which ports ought to be opened. Type the program name followed by "port forward" into a Google search box to get information as to which port numbers to open, and then note each port number down. Next, log into your ADSL routers configuration section with the username and password that was provided by the vendor. A port forwarding configuration page will appear after you click the Port Forwarding link. Netgear router users will have to click Add Custom Service, and then key in the Service Name (which is the program name), followed by the starting and ending port numbers that had been jotted down earlier. Some programs call for the opening of a set of ports, some only need one. If you have only one number written down, type in the number into both number fields.Your servers IP (Internet protocol) address should be the same as your Internet IP address, not your local network IP address. The WhatIsMyIp.com Web site makes it easy to know just what that set of numbers is. It will display the numbers on your computer screen. Type the numbers into the IP address field.By clicking Add and then Apply, you complete the process of configuring the router to open the ports necessary for your favorite programs to operate. So there you have it. Youre done with configuring your ADSL router in no time at all.
